This is a review of Abilify, an add-on treatment to other anti-anxiety and depression prescription medications.  Abilify is a type of medication called a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It works by increasing levels of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain that helps maintain mental balance. High levels of anxiety, stress, and tension can lead to panic and anxiety attacks. A panic attack can make something as simple as a trip to the grocery store unbearable and can impede your ability to make rational decisions. Panic attacks are at the best of times horribly inconvenient and, at the worst, potentially life threatening. Side Effects

This medication has an extremely long list of possible side effects and warnings. Antidepressant medicines may increase suicidal thoughts or actions in some children, teenagers, and young adults especially within the first few months of treatment. Depression and certain other serious mental illnesses are important causes of suicidal thoughts and actions. Patients of all ages who are started on antidepressant therapy should be monitored appropriately and observed closely for clinical worsening, suicidality, or unusual changes in behavior. Anyone considering the use of Lexapro or any other antidepressant in a child, adolescent, or young adult must balance this risk with the clinical need. Lexapro is not approved for use in pediatric patients except for patients with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Do not take Abilify if you:

• Take a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI), including linezolid or methylene blue, or if you stopped taking an MAOI in the last 2 weeks. Do not take an MAOI within 2 weeks of stopping Abilify. Ask your physician or pharmacist if you are not sure if your medicine is an MAOI
• Take Orap (pimozide)
• Are allergic to  any of the inactive ingredients in Abilify
