Browsing: Nail Fungus

Up to 10% of all adults in Western countries have nail fungal infections. In adults who are 60 years of age or older, this statistic climbs to 20%.
Some of the symptoms of nail fungus are nails which are thicker, brittle, dull, discolor or distorted in shape. These nails may completely come away from the nail bed and can cause pain in the nail tips and a bad smell. It has been found that toenails are more susceptible to fungus than fingernails. This is because after a toenail infection has begun, it will spread to the fingernails as a result of scratching and itching the toes and feet. However, if you wash your hands excessively or have them soaked in water for prolonged periods of time you may be damaging the protective layer of skin at the base of your nails and will be prone to fingernail infections and fungi.
